The necropolis of Poggino

The Etruscans in Chianti region

The necropolis of Poggino

The necropolis of Poggino is located  near Fonterufoli, 3 km  far away from the centre of Castellina in Chianti. The necropolis is on top of a hill and it was used as a cemetery from an Etruscan community lived in this area since the end of the seventh century to the fifth century b.C.

In this area they were found five tombs of which 4 at room and 1 at caisson. As well as often in the past these have been looted from their equipments, but they remained furniture and two amphorae with black at Attiche figures and an ampoule containing oils from the period Corinthian-Etruscan of Vulci (an ancient Etruscan city). Today only 4 of the 5 graves are visible, they have a monumental structure and are joined together by a footpath in the woods. All the archaeological finds from this necropolis are visible in the museum in the Rocca di Castellina in Chianti.
